Civil SocietySouth Africa’s civil society organisations are an essential component in achieving the rights as set out in South Africa’s Constitution. Community organisations are the most decentralised form of public participation and government departments such as Social Development, Health and Housing largely rely on these organisations. Human Rights organisations supported by the FHR largely concentrate on Human Rights Awareness, Capacity Building and Networking, Access to Justice and enhancing the working relationship between Public Institutions and Civil Society. Many organisations are rural-based with little access to other human rights organisations working in similar areas, and unlike larger urban human rights organisations, these organisations have little access to the media, donors and the government at large.
